Since this week the forecast calls for solid rain, I thought it would be a good time to talk able rainy wedding days. The first thing to remember if you’re getting married this week and you’re expecting rain is that rain or not, you’re marrying the love of your life this weekend and that is the most important part. Take a deep breathe and know that it is going to be okay.
I am often asked about “What if it rains on my wedding?” Some of my very favorite weddings have been on rainy days. Seriously, the entire sky is diffused and sometimes you are able to get more of a variety of locations because of it. Also, colors POP on rainy days. Overcast skies mean vibrant colors! I know that rain isn’t what a brides wishes for on their big day, but if it happens, it happens….. and we will just make the best of it!
1. All I need to create natural light portraits on a rainy wedding day is a porch! Just one porch!
2. Let me worry about the pictures. You have enough to think about. If there is a chance of rain, I’ll be sure to do some extra scouting to find a covered location or two, for us to use for you first look, romantic portraits and bridal party portraits.
3. Take it one step at a time. Don’t think about your entire day and what will happen if it rains. That will only overwhelm you! Definitely have a rain plan for your venue or purchase some clear umbrellas for your bridal party as a gift, but then let your vendors do the work of handling the rest of the day if rain is in the forecast.
I’m reminded of this wedding from a couple of years ago. Lucas + Ashley’s wedding was supposed to be outside at Charlestown Landing in Charleston, SC, but an unexpected monsoon forced the ceremony to move indoors onto a patio (it was still gorgeous). However there was a slight overhang on the side of the building and I had the couple go out there with an umbrella for shots. They ended up being their favorites. I wish I had a photo of me. My sweet husband Natraj was my assistant and he stood in the rain covering me and my camera for the monsoon. He was soaked but our couple was happy!
